What better way to start the year than with wines of Napa Valley and the wines of Franciscan Winery. Franciscan’s output of legendary wines began with the 1975 Cabernet Sauvignon, by Justin Meyer. This release established the Franciscan style based on making wine in small lots, then blending them together to achieve the greatest expression. Recognizing that the world’s finest wines are blends, in 1985 Franciscan introduced Magnificat. Under vintner Agustin Huneeus, this proprietary blend of Bordeaux varietals pioneered the popular Meritage class of wines.


Franciscan Chardonnay - The 2008 vintage Chardonnay showcases their expressive Napa Valley fruit and small lot craftsmanship. The 100% Chardonnay is full bodied, yet elegantly structured with delicate mineral, honey, citrus and stone fruit characteristics from the Carneros lots, and classic pear and apple notes from the South Napa vineyards. Aged 8 months in French and American oak.


Franciscan Merlot - They begin by growing their Merlot fruit in the cooler area of Napa Valley, primarily Yountville-south. Cooler vineyards create deeper color, more vibrant flavors, and denser structure. Aromas of ripe cherries and dark plum are interwoven with anise and peppercorn. Pretty and complex, the jammy fruit is complemented by the earthy notes. The flavor is well-structured and elegant. Round and balanced, with a soft mid-palate and fine tannins. Rich cherry and black currant flavors fill the palate, finishing with sweet notes of vanilla.


Franciscan Cabernet - The traditional press on their label symbolizes Franciscan’s commitment to crafting Napa Valley wines in small lots, and blending them to perfection. This ’07 Cabernet is just that, concentrated and well-built, the mouthfeel is substantial with flavors of currants, cherry and cocoa. Soft toasty notes build on the palate, leading to a rich lingering finish of plum and cassis.


Franciscan Magnificat - This elegant masterwork shows complex, layered aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum, and ripe black fruit flavors with hints of vanilla and spice. This wine has blends of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot for a great balance and their signature supple tannins.
